Here’s Why Solid State Drives are Way Better Than Traditional Hard Disk Drives

Here’s Why Solid State Drives are Way Better Than Traditional Hard Disk Drives

Your business has plenty of choices for data storage, but there are few options better suited for business environments than the solid state drive. Even though the hard disk drive is more common, the solid state drive offers many benefits that your organization cannot dismiss--certainly not if you want to seize all possible opportunities.

What Makes a Hard Drive
It’s likely that a recently acquired hardware on your business’s infrastructure already has a solid state drive on board, but older technology will not likely have this option, and will require the purchase of an external drive. Still, don’t let anyone tell you that solid state isn’t worth investing in, as they provide great ways of skirting around the shortcomings of hard disk drives.

By nature, a hard disk drive is less stable than a solid state drive, primarily due to the way it’s built. Data is stored on magnetic disks that spin at extremely high speeds. Even though there are fail-safes built into the hard drives, failure is still inevitable with a device like this. You don’t want to put the future of your business at risk, as a data loss disaster is particularly hard to recover from. Still, doesn’t it seem strange that HDD is used so much more frequently than a SSD, even with the myriad of benefits of the later?

There is a very simple answer to this, and it’s that the price is right for hard disk storage compared to solid state drives. The cost per byte is lower for hard drives than it is for solid state, but it should be mentioned that the margin has shrunk in recent years. You can get several terabytes of storage in HDD for much less than SSD. According to Computer Hope, when purchased in bulk, storage is even cheaper, with drives storing over 500GB.

The Benefits of SSD
HDD is great for getting the most data storage in terms of price, but SSD beats hard disk storage in pretty much every other category. SSDs don’t rely on rapidly spinning hardware to store data, which means that they aren’t subject to the same wear and tear that a HDD experiences. Furthermore, since it’s flash memory, it has a much faster access time--up to 100 times faster, in fact. Plus, SSDs use less power and make less noise, creating less heat and lasting much longer.

We assure you that you’ll notice an immediate and long-term difference by switching from HDD to SSD. If your business needs assistance with technology management or consultation, reach out to us at 708-781-7110.
