The 3 Biggest Reasons PC Upgrades are Avoided

As an IT company, we get excited about the newest computer hardware and software. We try to convince everybody that upgrades are great, but some people cannot be shaken from their devotion to what is familiar and refuse to upgrade their tech. In our experience, here are the three biggest reasons why upgrades are avoided.

"We are Comfortable with Our Old Software"
If the shoe fits, wear it, and then keep wearing it. Sometimes technology can be like an old shoe. When you first tried it on it felt awkward. With continued use you eventually grew into it. Over time, the shoe has molded to the shape of your foot and is now comfortable. After a while, the seams began to rip and holes developed, leaving your feet unprotected. Besides looking ratty, all of your friends have moved on to buying new shoes and they are beginning to make fun of your old kickers; but you don't care, because they feel so comfortable.

In the workplace, efficiency is important. If you have spent years using version 1 of an application, then perhaps you know it so well that you feel like you are super-efficient with it. This means that you don't want to take the time to learn the intricacies of version 2. You have your menus customized and everything is right where it is supposed to be, why would you want to mess with that? We feel ya. When Windows 8 was announced we had our reservations. We know Windows 7 like a family member, and Windows 8 appeared too different, many of us just weren't ready to get our swipe on. We have eventually come around to "The Ocho" and have now gotten past the new shoe stage where everything feels awkward. Admittedly, there is a bit of an adjustment with new software, but we think the benefits are worth it.

"My Old Computer is Working Just Fine"
There was a time in the history of the PC when it was a requirement to upgrade to a new computer just so that you could do mission critical tasks like using AOL; but in recent years, the development of PC hardware has not seen drastic leaps and bounds in regards to performance. This is why even some of the newest software can run on computers that are more than 5 years old. A casual PC user might also see no need to upgrade because they only use their computer to browse the Internet, use a word processor, and play Minesweeper (which can all be done quite well on an old PC). For the casual user, their older system might be working just fine, and that is just fine by us!

"We Can't Afford to Upgrade Right Now"
When money gets tight, upgrades don't seem all that important. While upgrading many of your existing applications can be a free download, buying new hardware and software will usually set you back a few pesos. We understand that businesses have budgets. We too have to sometimes put off an upgrade and in order to wait for new capital to come in. This is why Preferred is committed to working with the budgets of businesses, because we too are a business with a budget.

Everybody has their own reasons for putting off upgrading. We respect those reasons and will service old technology with the same quality service as new technology. Of course, we are always encouraging users to upgrade. Upgrading to the newest technology has several benefits, especially when it comes to productivity and network security.

Perhaps, you are one to hold out when it comes to upgrading. At the very least, you should stay up-to-date with your security patches; these security upgrades are free and won't change your workflow. Some upgrades like security patches are critical, there are other upgrades that you can put off and be perfectly fine with.

If you would like to know more about what upgrading to the newest technology can do for your business then call Preferred at 708-781-7110. We even have a remote maintenance service that will allow us to automatically and remotely perform all of your updates for you, keeping every computer on your network running smoothly and doing what you need it to in order to keep your business up-to-date with profits!
